The first time I noticed
I was just a little boy
You were fixing the switch
On my bedroom wall

When we played Rook
At the kitchen table
I saw you shuffle
And deal those cards

Sometimes we’d go outside
And do some yard work
Or you’d wind the vise
On your work bench

But there was nothing
Like watching you
Play those piano keys
That’s when I really knew

They were strong
They were gentle
Your ten digits spoke to me
They told me not to worry
They said, “I’m right here”
Your fingers sang to me

They were perfect
They were warm
They told me the story
They said, “Face your fears”
Your hands spoke to me

Remembering my father and all the times I sat or stood next to him at the piano and watched him play.
