I was born on the Memorial Day
In Flint, Michigan
Big Daddy worked first shift at Fords
My Mama did all she could
To keep me from the things my Daddy did
And how I want that new car
To take me down the freeway
Away from the troubles
That seem to come my way
When I was a little boy
I used to tell stories
My teachers tried to help me
My Mama did everything she could
To keep me from the things I had done
And how I want that new car
To take me down the road
Away from all the messes
I keep on adding to my load
When I had my first child
I was a proud father
But things went badly with that
My Mama did everything she could
To keep me from repeating what my Daddy did
And how I want that new car
To take me out of town
To stop the state agencies
From taking everything I own
So I took a job
Working sales at a dealership
And one day when things got too much
My Mama did everything she could
To stop me from what I’ve now done
And how I love my new car
The one I drove off the lot
Just took the keys and left
I’ll die before they get what I got
