Well, I left home about a week ago
Ten day trip to where I wanted to go
Just now thinkin’ how it was that day
Like I’d be gone for an eternity
My friends were there at the start
We had it all, we were so sharp
But the change came over fast
We knew our good times had passed

Seemed like I had forever to play
Darkness came over slowly

Well, this feelin’s about life too
When you’re over the hill
You’re not on the risin’ tide
Just rollin’ down the other side
You’ve seen it in the kings of pop
They had their big hits, were on top
Then things changed and moved ahead
Some couldn’t take it, wound up dead
It even goes through nations, you know
The end of glory days, no after glow
There’s a social feelin’ of ebb and flow
The lies, crimes and wars tell you so
Now you know what I mean
You’ve felt it once or twice

But there’s more, the song’s not done
The good times aren’t for everyone
When you see how the world’s arranged
You know decline & fall’s not so strange
There are those who never get time off
Can’t go away, visit grandma or Epcot
They’re livin’ life in a man-made hell
They have no vacation story to tell
But, can you see a time down the road
When there’s no need to lighten the load
Where every day and every one
Can do the things that need gettin’ done
Then, you’ll know what I mean
You’ll feel it in your soul
That time has really moved on
When vacations ran down

I went back to Point Pleasant, NJ for my 30th high school class reunion in 2008 and shared the time with my classmates. We were all reaching 50 years old and I started thinking about mortality during that 10-day getaway and how it was impacting me emotionally. Vacations are necessary, but they come to an end like everything else in this world including our own lives, our countries and the form of society we live in.
