Twenty-Five to Two-Oh-Five-Oh

Looking ahead to another time
Thinking about what we’ll find
Trying to get a clear picture
Like a time-capsule in my mind

Who’s got the riddle’s answer?
Will we be in deadly danger?
Can someone give me a clue?
Will things be in any way better?

I’ve got more questions now
Will we be there to even know?
Not you or me but any of us
A self-annihilating showdown?

Two-oh-five-oh
Long way to go
In Orwellian years
History will show

Yes, we can certainly predict
What is going to happen next
Out on the horizon of society
We know what we can expect

One can dwell in pitiful gloom
And say there in only doom
That the all-seeing panopticon
Will follow us into every room

It’s not just putting doubt aside
Or of blind pollyannish pride
The wars will come to an end
Because humanity did decide

Two-oh-five-oh
Not that far to go
In Orwellian years
History will show

I often think about what life will be like in the future. While Orwell got some things right, he could not predict what actually unfolded 25 years after 1984 was published. Will mankind overcome its existential multicrisis or will it succumb to self-annihilation? This is my answer.
